Why Tamil Films Are Struggling Up North?
Despite being a larger industry compared to Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, Tamil Cinema has been unable to break the barrier
Despite the remarkable success of the Baahubali series and the popularity of movies like the KGF series from Tollywood and Kantara films from Kannada cinema in the Hindi market, Kollywood, the Tamil film industry, has struggled to replicate the same triumph.
With the exception of Rajinikanth and Shankar's "2.0," which benefited from the inclusion of Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, Tamil movies have failed to make significant inroads in the North Indian market. Unlike their counterparts in Telugu and Kannada cinema, Tamil films have yet to make a strong impact in the 1000Cr club, a benchmark they aspire to achieve.
Despite being a larger industry compared to Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, Tamil Cinema has been unable to break the barrier without substantial support from the North market. Though hopes were pinned on films like "Vikram," the "Ponniyin Selvan" series, and Rajinikanth's latest offering "Jailer," none of these endeavors have managed to resonate with the Northern audience.
This discrepancy in success could be attributed to factors such as content resonance, marketing strategies, and a lack of recognizability of Tamil stars among North Indian viewers. For Tamil Cinema to ascend to the 1000Cr club, bridging the gap with the North market is crucial.
This may involve creating content with broader appeal, leveraging collaborations with well-known North Indian actors, and implementing innovative promotional tactics. Until then, while Tamil Cinema remains a dominant force regionally, its journey to conquer the all-India market continues to be a challenging pursuit.
