Back in the day, ace director SS Rajamouli found huge admiration for his “Baahubali” in Japan, and some fans even travelled to India to watch the movies. Though Baahubali 2 and, recently, Baahubali Epic were released in Japan as well, the films haven’t made huge money, though they made huge fans there. Similarly, many other movies like Kalki 2898 AD, Devara, Salaar and Pushpa 2 also got released in Japan, and our heroes promoted them too, but the success was limited. Rajamouli’s RRR is the only film that clicked well there and collected almost ₹24 crore.
Irrespective of the size of success, Indian films are right now trying to expand into that territory. Ranveer Singh’s ₹3000 crore getter, the Dhurandhar franchise, is actually looking forward to making it big at the Japanese box office. The first part of the film is hitting cinemas in Japan on the 10th of July. Guess what, Dhurandhar will be followed by a Telugu film. Teja Sajja’s Mirai, which collected more than ₹100 crore at the Indian box office, is getting ready for a Japanese release on August 21st. As both these films are superhits in India too, we have to see how far they would fare at the Japanese box office.
While Dhurandhar is high on emotions, surely the Japanese might find it tough to understand the contest between India and Pakistan. At the same time, Mirai has a very good premise that relates to Indian epics, but we have to see if there would be universal appeal for the same.
