One interesting factor that emerged during the current Lok Sabha elections is that it is the outsider who decides who wins in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Shocking, but true. In Telangana assembly elections, it is the resident non Telanganites, who worked to KCRâs advantage. The migrants from Andhra Pradesh have voted en masse to the TRS in AP. They played a key role in determining the fortunes of over 40 MLAs in Rangareddy, Hyderabad and Khammam.
In Andhra Pradesh elections, these very voters appear to have swung the fortunes of the political parties. As many as 60 lakh Andhraites, residing in Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have come back to cast their votes. Special buses and trains were arranged to ferry across these voters. Even those residing in the US had come back in significant numbers and cast their votes.
So, this time around, by voting in AP, they would influence the result. In Telangana, they would play deciders by not voting. They form at least 25 per cent of the voters and their shifting to AP during the elections, could rob the TRS of a chance to repeat its record performance.
But, these people are getting a chance to vote in two places â in Hyderabad and their native places. This is being seen as a distortion. Isnât it time that there are foolproof measures to prevent the same voter from influencing the electoral outcome in two different states?
