The new building has been constructed by India at a cost of about Rs 710 crore after the old parliament was bombed by Taliban.Afghanistan's old parliament which was once one of most regal and metaphorical buildings of the country was destroyed in terror attacks and India then promised to build the new parliament house as a mark of friendship.The buildings foundation stone was laid by then PM Manmohan Singh in 2009 and the building was completed recently.
Based on Mughal styles of architecture, the building's dome is one of largest among Asian parliaments.Modi addressing the gathering said that he was "deeply touched" that a section in the Parliament premises was named 'Atal block' after former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee
