With Telangana conducting the GHMC elections today, the much-awaited local body polls in Andhra Pradesh, which are due to be conducted since February this year attracted the attention of political observers.
Amid this, the Andhra Pradesh government led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan knocked on the doors of the Andhra Pradesh High Court over conducting the Local body polls.
In the petition, the state government told the court that, given the Covid-19 related situations in the state, it's not possible to go for the elections in February next year.
The Panchayat raj principal secretary Gopalakrishna Dwivedi filed the petition in this regard on the behalf of the state government. In the petition, he said SEC Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar announced the local body elections without even consulting the government.
Dwivedi told the High Court that SEC Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, who was against conducting the local body elections during the early days of the Covid-19 outbreak wants to conduct the elections now.
If the state goes for the local body elections in February 2021, the situation could be even worse. More than 6000 patients have succumbed to the pandemic so far, Dwivedi told the court.
