Update: 2017-06-02 13:43 GMT
Niti Ayog Chairman Aravind Panagariya informed media in Delhi that Special Category Status is a closed chapter not just for AP but all the States in the country. 'Even those 11 States which were accorded Special Status weren't extended any allowances or incentives since last month. Which means, Special Status States doesn't exist in India any more. Special Status willn't be granted to any state in future,' he says.

Aravind Panagariya maintains States share in Central Funds have been increased as per the recommendations of 14th Finance Commission. He adds, 'Hence, Special treatment to any state is unwanted'.

Regarding Andhra Pradesh, Aravind Panagariya disclosed that Niti Ayog has recommended Centre to offer Special Financial Package to the capital-less state instead of Special Status promised during bifurcation. He went on to say Special Package is more beneficial than Special Status and even AP Government have no complaints what-so-ever.
