The grand old Congress party is dealing with a leadership crisis. There is no chief for the party. Sonia Gandhi is currently serving as the interim chief as Rahul Gandhi stepped down from the post. The seniors in the party have been demanding the party to go for the polls to select the leader in a couple of months, the Congress Presidential polls will be held.
Looking at the current trend, we might see someone outside the Gandhi family becoming the chief of the party. Since its inception, the Gandhi family members have been running the party and holding the President's post.
As an unexpected twist in the election episode, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who is serving as the MP is believed to be in plans to contest the Presidential polls in the party if everything goes well. The MP is reportedly focusing on this, and exploring various options and possibilities as far as the polls are concerned.
Though Shashi Tharoor did not say anything about running the polls, his article in a leading daily on the importance of having a free election added fuel to the opinion that the MP is reportedly in plans to try his luck.
On the other hand, it has to be mentioned that Shashi Tharoor is among the rebel Congress leaders who waged a war against the Congress party demanding the needed changes in the party so that it can sustain itself in the current era of the mighty BJP.
Moreover, Congress often faces criticism for following dynasty politics as only the Gandhi family gets to rule the party. A few critics also say that Congress should give thought to handing over the charge to others to see if it works or not.
The BJP never misses an opportunity to target the Gandhi family ruling in the Congress party and it needs to be countered. Rahul Gandhi is not showing interest to take up the post and Sonia Gandhi's age is not supporting her.
Now there are two questions here. One is can Shashi Tharoor win the polls if he ever contests and the second question is whether the MP can run the party and bring back the lost glory to the party.
