Covid Fear: New Variant Creating Fear In India!

Update: 2023-04-08 11:14 GMT
When everything seems to be under control, the Covid outbreak is again ringing dangerous bells in the country. After a long gap, the Covid cases are again increasing in big numbers. India recorded the highest single-day infections caused by the Covid after over four months. The Covid situation turned tense in the country again.

For the past few weeks, single-day infections are being reported at around 2,000 at regular intervals. Now the numbers increased massively. The data shows that around 6050 new patients came in contact with the virus in the past 24 hours. 14 people passed away fighting the deadly virus.

Amid the tense situation, Minister of Health and Family Welfare of India Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a review meeting with the states and union territories and issued a few directives asking them to stay alert. They were asked to put a tab on the rising cases and find the emergency hotspots as precautionary measures.

The Union Minister also asked the states to conduct mock drills on the 10th and 11th of this month so that the facilities at the hospitals that treat the hospitals can be understood.

Every time Covid created a sensation it was due to the new variants. Yet again a new variant is the reason. The experts are saying that the XBB.1.16 Omicron variant is the reason behind the sudden spike in the cases as it comes with a bigger transmission rate. The new variant also has new symptoms as people infected with the new variant are also developing symptoms like high itching and problems with the eyes.

A recent study said that the new variant comes with a big reproductive number. It also says that the XBB.1.16 is very reproductive and might also spread across the world in the coming days as it is happening in India right now.

The global health body World Health Organization also said that the XBB.1.16 is having a big advantage as it is spread easily among the bigger population so everyone has to be careful. The researchers also raise doubt that the XBB.1.16 variant might also be immune to the existing vaccines. However few studies are needed for this.
