Telangana Government sent an indication that Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls might clash with Sankranti holidays. IT Minister K Taraka Rama Rao announced delimitation of wards & reservations based on weaker sections has been completed. Informing that Election Commission will issue a notification in a couple of days, He also hinted GHMC elections will happen in the third week of January 2016. When asked about the exact date, The first-time Minister told the polling date could be 17th of January.
Holding GHMC Elections on January 17th isn't a good move as Sankranthi holidays were announced by the educational institutions in Hyderabad from 10th to 17th of next month. Parties will face difficulties in campaigning if this happen because voters of AP origin will be leaving to their native places in the 2nd week itself. Many of these voters may skip voting as they have to cut short their holidays by at least one day. In addition, Lakhs of Ayyappa Devotees will be visiting Sabarimala during Sankranti season. Opposition Parties were worried as they believe their vote share will get affected hugely if AP origin voters don't exercise their vote.
Contrary to the buzz in political circles, Election Commission is keen on delaying GHMC election by a week in view of Sankranthi holidays. While the notification will be issued on January first week, Polling will be held on 23rd of next month. TRS will be feeling the heat if this materializes as GHMC is mostly dominated by people of AP origin & KCR need to re-work on his strategy.
