Social reformer and atheist Lavanam is no more

Well known social reformer and atheist Goparaju Lavanam is no more.  He breathed his last in Vijayawada on Friday morning while undergoing treatment for lung related ailment at Ramesh hospital in the town. Lavanam, a Gandian worked hard to remove untouchability from the Indian society.

Born on October 10 in 1930, Lavanam was the eldest son of freedom fighters and social reformers Gora (Goparaju Ramachandra Rao) and Saraswathi Gora. He married Hemalata, daughter of renowned poet Gurram Joshua.

He co-founded the institution, Samskar, with his wife Hemalatha.  He and his wife worked to reform the Jogini system prevalent in Andhra Pradesh through their organisation, Samskar.

As per Lavanam's wish, his eyes would be donated to Swetcha Gora Eye Bank and the body will be donated to Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada. He is brother of noted sexologist and former IMA president G. Samaram.

Recently in 2015 Lavanam won International Humanist Award for his contribution to promote human rights and social reforms
