Has the BRS and its govermment in Telangana scored a self-goal on the issue of bidding for the Vizag Steel Plant? The political pundits feel the BRS has made a serious error of judgement on the issue and is reaping a whirlwind. The Telangana government has sent three officials from the Singareni collieries to Vizag to study the process of the bidding.
Firstly, the BRS is talking of bidding for the VSP with the help of the Singareni Collieries at a time when the mines in the collieries are themselves being leased out. Instead of fighting against it seriously, the BRS has chosen to fight for the VSP, which is in the neighbouring state and will not benefit the people of Telangana in any which way.
The second issue is that the people of Telangana are questioning the Government's inaction on the issue of reviving the Nizam Sugar Factory in Bodhan and Azamjahi Mills in Warangal. The Telangana government has done practically nothing on this count. So, why should be interested in what is happening in VSP, ask political pundits. The BRS has no answer for this.
Thirdly, the biggest self-goal is that both the BRS and the Telangana government appear to have no knowledge of the fact that the government agencies cannot bid for the VSP. Moreover, the move is utterly counter productive as the BRS is opposing the privatisation of the VSP on one hand and is planning to take part in the bidding on the other.
