In a quick turn of events, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir blamed former Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for missing Century with just 3 runs in the iconic 2011 World Cup final against Srilanka.
While chasing a target of 275 runs, given by Srilanka, Gambhir's 97 off 122 balls laid a strong foundation followed by Dhoni unbeaten 91 off 77 balls helped India lift the world cup after 28 years.
Gambhir said that he missed the century after listening to Dhoni's advice that he is only three runs short for the magical three run figure. He added that Dhoni's words led to a rush of blood and resulted in his out.
"I have been asked this question many times, as to what happened when I was on 97. I tell everyone that before getting to 97, I never thought about my individual score, but only looked at the target set by Sri Lanka," Gambhir said in a recent interview.
"I remember that after the completion of one over, Dhoni told me that 'three runs are remaining, get these three runs and your hundred would be completed'," he observed.
"That's why it's important to remain in the present... When I was walking back to the dressing room after being dismissed, I said to myself that these three runs would trouble me for the rest of my life and that is true. Even to this day, people ask me why I couldn't get those three runs," he added.
