Karnataka registers first infection of South African variant of Covid-19

Given the fear caused by the new variants of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, India has focused on testing the passengers coming from foreign nations. The airport authorities are closely monitoring the testing process.

As part of the testing process, Karnataka capital Bengaluru registered its first case of the deadly South African COVID-19 strain. The first infection was registered on Wednesday.

Without revealing more details of the person, the state health department of Karnataka in the health bulletin said, Bengaluru registered the first-ever case of the South African variant of the pandemic.

After the first infection of the South African variant was detected, the authorities swung into action and started contact tracing of people who have come in contact with the person, reports claimed.

Karnataka added not less than 760 fresh Coronavirus infections on Wednesday which takes the total count of infections to 9,56,801. With six fresh casualties, total fatalities mounted to 12,379.

The South African variant which is said to be more deadly than the UK strain of the virus was first detected in December last year. The first-ever infection of the South African variant was detected in February this year. The other day, Gujarat's Surat too registered a South African variant of coronavirus infection.

On the other hand, India registered not less than 22,854, fresh infections in the past 24 hours, taking the country's caseload to 1,12,85,561. Nearly after two months, India added the highest cases.
