Legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra passes away

Legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra has passed away in a private hospital in Chennai on Thursday (February 13) morning at 11 am.He was admitted to the hospital after he suffered a heart attack.

Balu Mahendra was born in Sri Lanka and he worked across film industries and has made movies in almost all South Indian languages.Mahendra has won five National Film Awards—two for cinematography, three Filmfare Awards South and numerous state awards from the governments of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Balu Mahendra is well known to Telugu spectators with the films Nireekshana and Sathi Leelavathi.Nireekshna was released in the year 1982 and remained as all-time classic.

He was lauded for usage of natural lighting and was among the first to pioneer innovative camera style for colour in South India. Younger cinematographers like Santosh Sivan,Ravi K. Chandran, Natarajan Subramaniam, K. V. Anand have been inspired by him.

Making his directional debut in 1977 through the Kannada film Kokila, he went on to make over 20 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi. He is widely regarded as part of the first in a wave of directors and screenwriters from the Chennai film industry who revitalized Tamil cinema.

Mahendra usually writes the script for his films, handles the camera and edits the film himself, thus retaining a firm control over his creative output.The veteran has turned actor with Thalaimuraigal and he won accolades for his performance and making.
