Nigerian federal government indefinitely suspends Twitter, for deleting President's Tweet
The social media giant Twitter is facing issues over its policy, with the list of countries imposing restrictions on the microblogging site getting bigger and bigger. One more nation made it to the list of nations to ban Twitter.
Going into detail, the African nation Nigeria had indefinitely suspended the activities of Twitter after the social media platform had deleted the tweet of Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Earlier this week, the Nigerian President made a tweet in which he mentioned the 1967-70 war. Buhari said many of those, who are misbehaving now are unaware of the destruction caused by the Nigerian war.
He even said that those of them who were in the fields during the war will treat those who are misbehaving in the language they understand.
"Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigeria civil war. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand," the President said in the deleted tweet.
Reacting to Twitter deleting the President's tweet, the Information Minister accused the social media giant of having an agenda. Did Twitter react in the same way to tweets made by others? He asked.
Two days after the President's tweet was deleted, Nigeria had indefinitely suspended Twitter activities in the nation. An official statement was issued by the Ministry of Information and Culture in this regard.
