One Seat, Three Parties, Three Castes

Update: 2021-02-16 04:52 GMT
Nagarjunasagar byelection has become a prestigious issue for all the three major political parties. For the ruling TRS, the election has become an issue of salvaging its lost prestige. For the Congress, it is an election that can prove that it is still in the race. For the BJP, a success in Nagarjunasagar means that it is the main challenger for the 2023 elections.

Each party is depending on one major caste for its success formula. The Congress is mainly banking on the Reddy community for its success. Reddys are the dominant group in Nagarjunasagar and Congress candidate  K Jana Reddy is an old warhorse with deep connections in the Reddy community. The TRS feels the Yadavs and the other BCs will be its mainstay. The outgoing MLA Nomula Narsimhaiah, whose death necessitated the bypoll was a Yadava.  As for the BJP, it feels the tribals, who form a sizeable chunk in the constituency would be the target. The party is working out strategies to woo the numerically strong Banjara community.

As of now, each party is trying to woo its target community even while holding on to the traditional support base. The TRS and the BJP are also trying to put up candidates from the Reddy community so that the traditional vote bases can be taken care of.
