Vizag Steel Plant Row: Gandhi Scion To Support Agitation?

Update: 2023-04-12 12:00 GMT
The Vizag Steel plant privatisation row went through various twists and turns already. The issue turned political already. The opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh are accusing the ruling YSRCP of not taking the required steps to stop the Steel plant. However, the opposition parties also did not fight against privatization due to their reasons.

Telugu Desam Party is in a big crisis and should win the next elections for its future. On the other hand, Pawan Kalyan is in alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party. So he also cannot aggressively oppose and fight for it as he did with the Amaravati capital issue.

Telangana Chief Minister KCR is aggressively focusing on national politics. He earlier held meetings in Maharashtra. The BRS boss is also eyeing Andhra Pradesh. He is the main reason behind the state bifurcation and he earlier made many controversial comments about Andhra and its leaders.

As he needs a trump card to enter Andhra Pradesh, KCR wants to take part in the bidding. A delegation of Singareni reportedly visited the Vizag Steel Plant to understand the situation and get details of how things are going on and the plus and minuses of running the plant. This shows that BRS is very focused on its aim.

With this, KCR and BRS want to project themselves as the fighter of AP interests. Keeping aside the issue of how effective the narrative would work, the party is going forward with this. It appears that another leader is going to join the list.

As per the media reports, Rahul Gandhi is likely to come to Vizag to support the protests. With this, Congress would also get a positive image in Andhra Pradesh. The Congress got almost wiped out in the state and this would help the party to spread its wings again. Earlier Rahul Gandhi supported Amaravati farmers' protests and said that would help them once Congress comes to power.

On the other hand, the Vizag steel plant, or the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam was founded in 1982 when the Congress was in power in the then-combined Andhra Pradesh and the centre. Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister then and this is like a prestigious one for the grand old Congress.
