"Unfair and Lovely"?

Well! We have all grown up listening to the 'Fair and Lovely' advertisements – how fairness is important and how being black is not good. But thanks to the 'Black Lives Matter' agitation in the wake of Black American George Floyd's death by stifling, the MNC Uniliver has decided to change its definition of Fair and  Lovely. The name will finally be changed. It will now be 'Glow and Lovely' not 'Fair and Lovely.'

The beauty product, which has been promoting fairness as being lovely, will change its brand name. Though there have been several campaigns against the Uniliver's concept of fairness, the company had always stuck to its fairness concept and several MNCs like Proctor and Gamble too had come up with similar products. But, now the company has announced that it is going to change the name. 'We are fully committed to having a global portfolio of skin care brands that is inclusive and cares for all skin tones, celebrating greater diversity of beauty. We recognise that the use of the words 'fair', 'white' and 'light' suggest a singular ideal of beauty that we don't think is right, and we want to address this,' a press note from Unilever said it.

Interestingly, most of the Bollywood celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Yami Gautam, Sonam Kapoor and Katrina Kaif had endorsed the product. Only Kangana Ranaut has refused to do an ad for the Fair and Lovely saying that her sister Rangoli is of dark complexion and she will not do any ad that demeans her sister's skin colour.
