When the Andhra Pradesh government announced the repeal of the three capitals bill, everyone thought that Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who repealed the controversial agriculture bills bowing down to the strong willpower of the farmers. But the reality was quite different.
Having announced the repeal of the three capitals bill, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said that there is no change in the plan to have three capitals and the bill was repealed to just bring another bill which will not land in any issues.
Amaravati farmers, whose happiness on the three capitals bill was short-lived, had announced that the protest demanding Amaravati as the sole capital of the state will be continued. Till the government makes an announcement on this, we would not give up on the protests, the farmers said.
The bill to repeal the three capitals bill was introduced in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly at the time when the High Court is hearing a bunch of petitions on the issue on a daily basis. This had started a new argument that the government tabled the bill on a war foot just to save the bills from getting struck by the High Court.
The Amaravati farmers who have been protesting against the three capitals proposal have started a Maha Padayatra that would be held for 45 days. Starting from Amaravati, the Yatra will go through various districts and end at the temple city Tirupati. By Wednesday, the Maha Padayatra reached Sunnpubatti on its 24th day.
Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi, which is leading the farmers' protests, said that they are receiving support from the opposition parties TDP, BJP, and the locals of the villages as well. Alleging that obstacles are being made for the protest, the farmers are alleging that such obstacles were created seeing that the padayatra is getting bigger and bigger.
It has to be noted that, lathi charge was used against the Amaravti farmers earlier in the Prakasam district. Dozens of the farmers sustained severe injuries in the scuffle. However, the cops said that the farmers had to be stopped as they had violated the court orders.
