After the Maharashtra fiasco, where the BJP tried to ally with Ajit Pawar to form the government, there is a growing clamour among the BJP cadres to give more importance to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in the party affairs. Nitin Gadkari had opposed the attempt to ally with Ajit Pawar and said he is a slippery guy who cannot be trusted. But, the party paid no heed to him and bulldozed his opinion. It paid the price for this misadventure.
Even during the campaigning, Nitin Gadkari was completely sidelined. He had no say in choosing the candidates and in chalking out of the campaign strategy. Even during the campaign, he was limited to a few meetings in Vidarbha region. Several of his proteges were denied party tickets. Even after the results were out, Gadkari was not consulted in chalking out the strategy for government formation. His supporters say that had he been there, the Shiv Sena might have stuck to the alliance with the BJP. But, Devendra Fadnavisâ handling of the situation forced them to walk out on the alliance and join hands with the Congress and the NCP.
Now that the BJP has failed to form the Government in Maharashtra and several of its key leaders are now coming out into the open criticising the party leadership for its handling of the crisis. They are demanding for a greater say for Nitin Gadkari. Interestingly, both Devendra Fadnavis and Nitin Gadkari are from the Vidarbha region and both are considered very close to the RSS. But, Gadkari has been sidelined by the party Central leadership. Now, after the fiasco, the demand for a greater role for Nitin Gadkari in the party affairs in Maharashtra.
