Time was when every IAS officer fancied moving to Delhi, the real seat of power in the country. Everyone wanted a stint at the Centre on deputation so that he could get a grasp of the labyrinthine corridors of power. But no more. Given the tough task master that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is, the officials are now wary of coming to Delhi and work there.
This year, only 153 IAS officers have opted to work in Delhi on deputation. This is much lower compared to 2016-17, when there were 247 officials on deputation and in 2015-16, when there were 320. In 2014-15, there were 360 officials on deputation. The deputations are given as part of the Central Staffing Scheme, which enables the IAS officers to work as deputy secretaries, directors, joint secretaries, additional secretary and secretaries in the Union Government. But, with Modi at the helm, the officials are expected to work for at least 14 to 16 hours every day and most of the officials are under the direct monitoring of the big boss, who is a very tough task master. The officials have realised that a stint in Delhi is no longer a vacation or holiday.
As a result, the number of officials willing to go to the Centre on deputation has come down drastically. Only the best and the toughest can survive Modi. So, most IAs officials are opting out of the deputation scheme.
