It appears quite clear now that the YSRCP would make the three-capitals issue its chief electoral plank in the coming elections. This would help the party win support in all the three regions, feel YSRCP's thinking heads. They are planning to highlight this issue for the 2024 elections. The party hopes to corner the TDP, which is rooting only for Amaravati by raising this issue.
The YSRCP initially banked upon the welfare schemes and the pensions that are given to marginalised sections. It felt that these doles would see them through. However, recent surveys have shown that the welfare doles have failed to create a favourable situation for the YSRCP. Also, the Gadapa Gadapaku programme, aimed at gauging the public mood over the welfare schemes, turned out to be a did.
Hence, the party's strategists began to have second thoughts about making doles and freebies a poll plank. Now, they feel that the party can get the support of all regions of the state if the three capitals issue is raked up. Hence, the government is exploring the possibility of bring up a modified bill that stands the test of law and go to the people on the plank of three capitals.
YSRCP sources said that YS Jagan could soon shift his camp office to Visakhapatnam to instil confidence among the voters of North Andhra region. Similarly, plans are said to be afoot to conduct one session of the assembly in Vizag, another in Amaravati and yet another in Kurnool. Thus, the regional aspirations of all the three regions would be addressed, the YSRCP feels.
So, expect stormy politics in the days to come, with Chandrababu rooting for Amaravati and Jagan going for three capitals. The elections in AP could be fought on this issue.
