The BJP in Karnataka wants to repeat its Gujarat formula. It wants to replace many of the sitting MLAs, who were regarded as under-performers or non-performers, with young and new faces. The BJP hopes to reduce the anti-incumbency against its government in Karnataka. As a result, the first list of the party contains several new faces.
This is a tried and tested formula in Gujarat and Modi derived benefit from this strategy. It is because of this system that the party has been in power from 1995. Using the same system, the first list of the party for Karnataka has several new faces. Modi reportedly asked the party leaders not to give tickets to those who are above 75 years of age. He also wanted those facing corruption charges
At least 56 of the candidates in the list of 189 are new faces. What is important is that Modi has told the leaders point blank that sons should not be given the tickets in places where the fathers are being retired. He said this dynastic system must be done away with. Accordingly, tickets have not been given to the wards of former chief minister Jagadish Shettar and former deputy chief minister Eshwarappa.
Significantly, Shettar has raised a banner of revolt against this. More seniors are likely to follow suit. But, Narendra Modi is said to be defiant and wants no traces of dynastic rule in Karnataka. He is said to have told the party leaders that only those who have worked for the party during the last five yeas should be given the tickets.
