Will Supreme Court Ex-CJ Be Made CM?

Update: 2020-08-26 08:12 GMT
Will former chief justice of the Supreme Court Ranjan Gogoi be made the chief minister of Assam after the upcoming assembly elections? There are speculations in the political world, especially in Assam about this. This has sent the BJP in Assam into a tizzy as the incumbent CM Sarbananda Sonowal and his deputy Himantha Biswa Sharma are both strong contenders.

Justice Gogoi has captured the imagination of the people with his strong judgements on the Article 370, Sabarimala and Ramjanma Bhoomi issues. After his retirement, he was made a member of the Rajya Sabha. This has led to a criticism that he was hand in glove with the BJP and that he would be rewarded with the CM's post. There were also speculations that Sarbananda Sonowal would be brought to the Central Government and HImantha Biswa could be asked to work with Gogoi.

However, former chief justice Ranjan Gogoi has scoffed at these rumours. He said there was no truth in this. Meanwhile, Himantha Biswa Sharma has also indicated that he would not contest the elections this time. He said he would campaign for the party in the election. Despite these denials, rumours continue to abound in Assam.
