Whatever happened to the special committee that the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee has constituted to probe into the causes of the humiliating defeat of the party in the Huzurabad byelections? It has been three weeks, but the committee is yet to meet, let alone begin the inquiry. There is no activity and no introspection whatsoever.
The Congress, which traditionally has a vote bank of around 20000, got a paltry 3000 votes in the Huzurabad bypoll. This crushing defeat has sent shockwaves in the party with the anti-Revanth Reddy faction targeting the PCC chief. They said that he had compromised with the BJP candidate and encouraged the shifting of the votes to the BJP. Finally, the political affairs committee has decided to form a committee with leaders from outside the state and probe into the causes of the dismal performance of the party.
The Congress insiders feel that the party could have had some face-saving if at least 20000 votes were polled in favour of the Congress candidate. Many feel that there was an underhand dealing between Congress leaders and the BJP and the Congress votes shifted to the BJP in the bargain. Though the committee was formed three weeks ago and it has not even met once so far. There are no signs of a meeting in future.
The committee has a senior leader from Karnataka. He is expected to visit Huzurabad, meet defeated candidate Balmuri Venkat and then submit a report. But, when will this visit take place? No Congress leader is in a position to answer.
