The Indian embassy has warned all the Indian nationals to immediately leave certain parts of Mexico due to the ongoing conflict in the North American country. Here is a look into the story behind the same.
The Embassy of India in Mexico on Monday issued an urgent safety advisory for Indian nationals living in Mexico after escalating violence erupted following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho”, the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The advisory, posted on the embassy’s official X account, warned Indians in several states to shelter in place, stay vigilant, and avoid unnecessary travel or crowds amid reports of ongoing criminal activity, security operations, and road blockages.
The alert specifically mentioned areas of Jalisco including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara, parts of Tamaulipas including Reynosa, as well as regions of Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo León where unrest has spread.
Nationals were advised to monitor local media for updates, follow directions of local authorities, keep family and friends informed about their whereabouts, and contact local emergency services by dialing 911 in urgent situations. The embassy also shared its consular helpline number for assistance.
The violent backlash began on Sunday after Mexican security forces killed El Mencho during a major military operation in Jalisco State, a stronghold of the CJNG. Within hours, cartel affiliates retaliated across multiple states by setting vehicles on fire, blocking highways and clashing with law enforcement, prompting other foreign missions, including the U.S. and Canadian embassies, to issue similar shelter-in-place warnings to their citizens.
The unrest underscores the challenges Mexico faces in combating powerful criminal groups, even as authorities pursue high-profile targets.
