Hyderabad has been facing a pretty significant challenge when it comes to controlling the drunk driving incidents, and this is again on display as the city has witnessed an organising number of such reportings over the last couple of days .
More than 700 motorists were booked for drunk driving across Hyderabad and Cyberabad during a two day special enforcement drive carried out on February 20 and 21.
The crackdown was led by the Hyderabad Traffic Police, which intensified night checks at key junctions, pubs corridors, and accident prone stretches. According to officials, 492 motorists were caught in Hyderabad alone for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Among those booked, the majority were two wheeler riders. A total of 412 cases were registered against two wheelers, showing that bike riders formed the largest group of offenders.
In addition, 29 three wheelers and 51 four wheelers were also caught during the drive. A few other vehicle categories were included in the total count as well.
Authorities stated that all offenders will be produced before the court, and strict penalties will be imposed as per law. Repeat offenders may face harsher punishment, including possible suspension of driving licences.
Traffic police officials reiterated that drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents. They urged citizens to act responsibly and avoid getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.
The special drive is part of an ongoing effort to improve road safety and reduce accident related deaths in the city.
