Tesla's India Entry: EV Launch Plans and Pricing Strategy
The U.S.-based automaker plans to introduce fully imported electric vehicles (EVs) to India.;

Elon Musk's Tesla Inc. is gearing up to enter the Indian market. The company's Indian subsidiary, Tesla India Motor & Energy, has applied for homologation and certification of two models: Model Y and Model 3. These certifications are essential before launching any vehicle in India. Ahead of its official entry, Tesla has reportedly chosen a location for its first showroom in Mumbai's BKC area.
The U.S.-based automaker plans to introduce fully imported electric vehicles (EVs) to India. Musk has shown enthusiasm about expanding into India, considering it a significant alternative to the Chinese market, which faces U.S. sanctions.
Tesla Model Y Features
The Tesla Model Y underwent a mid-cycle refresh in January. It now features updated LED lighting, improved aerodynamics, and revamped interiors with a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch rear passenger screen. Available in RWD and Long-Range AWD variants, the Model Y offers ranges of 719km and 662km respectively. It accelerates from 0-100kph in 5.9 seconds (RWD) and 4.3 seconds (AWD).
In India, the estimated price for the Tesla Model Y is around Rs 70 lakh.
Tesla Model 3 Specifications
The Tesla Model 3 sedan comes in three variants: Long-Range RWD, Long-Range AWD, and Performance. The RWD model offers a range of 584km with a 4.9-second acceleration from 0-100kph, while the AWD version provides a range of 557km with a 4.2-second acceleration time.
The high-performance variant delivers an impressive 510hp, accelerating from 0-100kph in just 2.9 seconds. The interior of the Model 3 mirrors that of the Model Y with similar screen features.
In the U.S., the Tesla Model 3 is priced at $29,990 (Rs 25.99 lakh). If imported to India with a duty of 15%, its estimated ex-showroom price would be approximately Rs 29.79 lakh.
Affordability Concerns
Affordability is crucial for Tesla's success in India. With prices starting around ₹30 lakh ($37,000), Tesla's EVs will primarily target premium and luxury segments. Even with an anticipated reduction in import duties by about 15-20%, Tesla's most affordable car would still cost between ₹35-40 lakh.
A report by CLSA indicates that Tesla's cheapest Model 3 costs around $35,000 (₹30.4 lakh) at the factory level in the U.S., leading to an on-road price of approximately ₹35-40 lakh ($40,000 USD) in India after road tax and insurance are added.
If Tesla introduces a more affordable entry-level model priced below ₹25 lakh, it is unlikely to significantly impact Indian automakers due to lower EV penetration compared to China, Europe, and the U.S.
Long-term Strategy
Tesla's success in India will likely hinge on its long-term strategy - whether it remains an imported luxury brand or establishes local manufacturing to reduce costs for a broader audience.
