The new immigration policies brought up by the United States government has become a topic of discussion and there is a lot of debate happening on this matter. This matter has now reached a significant proportion as the United States has rejected visa to a Nobel prize winner himself.

Nigerian Nobel winner and celebrated writer Wole Soyinka revealed that his U.S. non-immigrant visa was recently revoked, a move he believes may be linked to his criticism of former American President Donald Trump.

The 91-year-old author said he received an official letter from the U.S. Consulate in Lagos dated October 23, 2025, stating that additional information became available after the visa had been granted, leading to its cancellation.

Soyinka suggested that the decision might have followed his comments comparing Trump to Ugandan dictator. Despite the revocation, Soyinka expressed no frustration, saying he would not reapply for the visa as the matter, to him, represents a question of principle and personal dignity rather than travel inconvenience.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria declined to comment, citing confidentiality around visa decisions, but reiterated that visas can be withdrawn at any time under U.S. law. The move has sparked discussions about freedom of speech and the possible political motivations behind visa restrictions.
