Athletes representing their respective countries are carrying high hopes to win the medals. Winning an Olympic medal is a prestigious thing.
As the Olympics started let us have a look at the rise of Women athletes. If we trace the rise of them from the first Olympics to the 2024 edition there is a big difference in their participation. Now we have around 50 percent of participation.
The first edition of the Olympics was held in 1896 and hosted by Greece's capital Athens. However, there was no women representation in the first edition. It took some time for the doors to be opened for women. The 1900 edition of the Olympics saw women athletes competing for the medals. 22 athletes were allowed at the event.
The representation of women was less than 20 percent even till 1976. But things started getting better with time. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, around 48 percent of women athletes were part of the event. Out of 11,420 athletes, 5457 were women.
Cut to 2024 there are 50 percent of athletes.5416 women athletes are in the race this time. This speaks volumes about the prestigious journey of women athletes. From no representation in the opening edition to having 50 percent representation in 2024 they have come a very long way.
