Reaching the target of Vaccinating entire India by 2021- end is not possible!

Update: 2021-08-14 10:23 GMT
The nationwide vaccination drive started in January this year is still going on in India to vaccinate the people across the country. The Centre is confident on administering vaccine doses to the entire population in the country by the end of 2021.

The Chairperson of Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) Cyrus Poonawalla gave his opinion on the claims of vaccinating the population of India by 2021 end.

Mr.Poonawalla said in reality, administering vaccines to the entire population is not possible and opined that sometimes politicians bluff about certain things.

Giving more details on the practicality of vaccinating entire India, Cyrus Poonawalla said SII is manufacturing 10 crore vaccine doses monthly which in turn results in manufacturing 110-120 crore doses per year.

The doses manufactured in a year will not be able to vaccinate the entire population. Hence it is next to impossible to reach the expectations, the SII Chairman said.

During the press conference, Cyrus Poonawalla expressed his dissatisfaction with the union government imposing a ban on the export of vaccine doses.

He said, the situation in several countries is quite scary and the countries have been waiting for the doses. They are looking at SII for the doses. We are unable to export the vaccine doses due to the ban on export, he maintained.

Giving his opinion on the new suggestion that mixing up vaccine doses to fight the pandemic, SII Chairman Cyrus Poonawalla said it is wrong to mix up two different doses.

Saying that there is no data that can prove mixing the vaccine doses will help in fighting the pandemic, he warned that such practices might result in worse outcomes.

However, he came up with a new suggestion that after taking two doses of Covishield, a booster dose is advisable.

He went on to say that, six months after taking the Covid doses, the antibodies in the person who took the dose will come down. That's why taking the third dose, a booster dose is advisable, he maintained.

I took the third dose. Seven to eight thousand employees working at the SII were also given the booster dose, he concluded.
