Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde had Friday evening informed the Jammu and Kashmir government about the decision to hang parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said while appealing for calm in the state.

"Home minister (Sushilkumar Shinde) called me around 8 p.m. Friday and told me about the government's decision to hang Afzal Guru," Abdullah told reporters here Saturday.

Guru, who belonged to Sopore in the Kashmir Valley, was hanged on Saturday at about 8.a.m., a few metres away from the Tihar Jail cell in the national capital where he had been lodged since 2001.

Abdullah said the union government asked the state government to put into place a plan of action to contain the fallout following the execution.

"I understand there is a certain degree of angst and there are some who would like to exploit this situation. I urge restraint," he said.

"I urge the people of Jammu and Kashmir not to resort to any violent protest. I appeal to media to please verify and not fall for rumours," he said.

The chief minister said all necessary precautions in every district of the state had been put in place and the army had not been called out yet.
