In Bollywood, the OTT releases are just increasing day on day. Amitabh Bachchan has paved the way for many with his film 'Gulabo Sitabo'. Today Amazon Prime has announced its direct OTT release today is 'Gulabo Sitabo'. The film is directed by Shoojit Sircar of 'Piku' fame. The film stars Megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana. The film would stream on June 12 on Amazon Prime.
Other Bollywood films also followed the Megastar's way but their tentative OTTs didn't announce the streaming dates. The films include big budget entertainers. 'Laxmmi Bomb' (Disney Hotstar), 'Gunjan Saxena' (Netflix) 'Shakuntala Devi' (Amazon Prime). Other small films include 'Jhund' and 'Ludo' that are in talks with OTT platforms.
On hearing these speculations, Tollywood movie buffs are asking what about our films, will anyone release directly on OTTs or still wait for the Theaters? The other interesting question doing rounds on social media is why down south producers are not liking the idea of OTT release in this hour of crisis.
Here is a small comparison on how Bollywood and Tollywood depends on Theater business or revenue. In Bollywood, the exhibition industry (Theaters) are owned and maintained by third party corporate giants (eg: PVR, Carnival INOX etc) who take higher margins in the revenue collected through theatrical release and just peanuts remain for the producers there even after a mega hit!
The Theater chains and Multiplex partners even threatened the stars who produce their films not to release in that festive season (Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan faced these troubles during simultaneous release).
After all these troubles, the producers like Karan Johar who were messed up big time with these exhibitors started releasing the films on OTT giant. Trend started with Netflix releasing films like Drive, Sky is Pink and Guilty to name a few.
Now Take the case of Tollywood, Here the Big families, Big Production houses and producers are involved in both production and exhibition something like monopoly and that's why they never dare to release their films on OTT directly. Moreover, they fear the Theater business would be doomed anytime soon and assets so far maintained will be having low value in the market.
Here in Tollywood, Individual film makers are not at all on the rise and that itself slows down the OTT releases down south. It would be a good idea to bring good talent in the Industry by encouraging independent film makers and remember Theater is not the only place to show case their talent!
