Thanks to the ongoing pan Indian hype and related discussions in Indian cinema. Every film featuring a superstar is being shot on a lavish scale with hundreds of crore budget. It has become a normalcy for superstars to do films that are costing in the range of ₹300 or even 400 crore.
Comparatively Tamil cinema is lagging behind in this race with not a single thousand crore film at the global box office. In this context, Tamil director, Gautham Vasudev Menon has passed an interesting comment.
In his latest interaction, Gautham revealed that he wants the industry to make 10 films with a budget of ₹10 crore, rather than making one film that costs 100 crore. He gave the implication that all the stars are now becoming money spinners and are looking to have their producers, invest big money in their productions.
He was of the opinion that this trend of making big production films is not the right thing to do as it will take away the joy and sensitivity of making artist Cinema. He challenged star heroes to take the challenge of making more rooted content rather than running after mega production films.
“For instance, if a Malayalam film does very well at the box office, then it will be remade in Tamil cinema. But if the very same script was originally taken to a Tamil Hero, he would not have done it. This trend needs to be stopped, and more original cinema needs to be encouraged and replenished.” The director said.
However, the point to be noted here is that the transition from regular cinema to big production cinema has happened already and every single superstar in the country who has a solid enough market is looking at Pan Indian cinema. At this point in time, no superstar would be ready to do a film that costs just ₹10 crore. But at the same time, it must be noted that Gautham also has a valid point here as making original rooted cinema is also a need of the hour.
