The famous Brinda Theatre in Chennai, which was inaugurated by Senior Actor Rajinikanth in 1985, has been demolished, marking the end of a chapter in film history. Once a gathering place for moviegoers, particularly Rajinikanth fans, the theater was known affectionately as the "Rajini Theatre" and was a landmark in North Chennai for almost 40 years.
Since making his feature film debut in 1975 with Apoorva Raagangal, Rajinikanth has worked in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam, and Bengali. He opened the Brinda Theatre in 1985 to commemorate his 100th movie, and it quickly became a favorite for showing his hit movies.
However, several of these historic movie theatres in Tamil Nadu have closed due to shifting hours and declining theatregoers. An era came to an end earlier this week when the Brinda Theatre, which was first owned by Loganathan Chettiar and subsequently run by his sons Viswanathan and Chandrasekhar, ceased showings. According to reports, a private construction business has purchased the land and intends to replace it with flats.
"Even though it was called Brinda Theatre, for fans it was always Rajini Theatre," said Panneerselvam, the theater's 40-year management, in response to the demolition. Here, every Rajinikanth movie was shown, and the enthusiasm was unparalleled.
Another chapter of Tamil cinema's illustrious past is lost with the demolition of the Brinda Theatre, leaving behind sentimentality and memories that have been treasured by generations of viewers.
