Popular director Puri Jagannadh is not only famous for his blockbuster films but also for his thought-provoking “Musings” videos on YouTube. In his latest Musings episode, Puri Jagannadh spoke openly about how today’s education system focuses too much on marks, exams and competition instead of building strong human beings.
He said, “Modern schools are giving students a lot of knowledge, but that knowledge is not helping them become mentally strong human beings.” According to him, the country needs youth with “character, discipline, emotional balance, responsibility and practical wisdom.”
The director explained that schools should teach children important life skills from a young age. He said, “From LKG itself, children should learn household work, cleanliness, punctuality, and honesty.” Puri Jagannadh said that schools should introduce cooking classes, survival skills, sports, and exercise as compulsory activities. According to him, these skills are far more useful in real life than only memorizing textbook lessons.
He also spoke about mobile phone addiction and internet usage among students. He said, “Schools must teach digital discipline and reduce screen addiction. Students should know how to properly use the internet.”The filmmaker strongly stressed the importance of emotional and mental health. He said lessons about “self-control, time management, emotional balance, stress handling, anger control, and communication skills” are more important than many subjects taught today.
He further said, “Every student should learn at least three languages and understand the importance of communication in life.” He also suggested meditation sessions and mental health awareness programs in schools and colleges.
One of the strongest parts of his speech was when he spoke about student suicides in India. He said thousands of students are losing their lives every year because of academic pressure, fear of failure, family expectations, depression, anxiety, and entrance exams like NEET.
Puri Jagannadh emotionally said, “Parents should understand that nothing is lost even if their child does not become a collector.” He also pointed out that many people who failed in exams are earning more today than some top-ranking students.
The director criticized the current education system for putting children under pressure from a very young age. He said, “Keeping children constantly in competition mode for marks and exams is not healthy.”
He also made a strong statement saying, “The education we study has very little connection with real life.” He added that formulas and theories alone cannot help people face life struggles. Instead, motivation, emotional strength, discipline, and practical wisdom are what truly help in difficult situations.
Puri Jagannadh also suggested that police officers should visit colleges to teach civic sense and responsibility. He even said one year of military training after degree education could help students become more disciplined and mentally fit citizens.
Finally, he concluded by saying, “Education is important, but values and culture are even more important.”
