South Indian cinema is conventionally different from Indian cinema when it comes to the choices of filmmaking and also the physique of heroines and actresses. The same has been highlighted by actress Surveen Chawla who had already worked on the South Indian cinema scene.

Surveen said producers and directors even told her to put on weight because they believed that was what the audience liked. She shared, “They would ask me to gain weight, saying I was too slim. They thought South audiences liked ‘healthy-looking’ heroines. I didn’t agree with this, but I had no choice.”

Surveen believes this kind of thinking is outdated. According to her, everyone should be accepted for how they naturally look. Whether someone is slim or curvy, the film industry should not force anyone to change their body to get roles. She added that the same problem exists in other film industries too, not just in the South.

She said she’s glad the audience today is more open-minded and accepting. People now care more about talent than body shape, and that is a good change. Her comments have started a conversation about body standards in South cinema, and many are now asking if it’s time for the industry to stop judging actresses by their looks.

Appears to be the standard operating procedure in the South Indian film industry now, and the same has been pointed out by the actress.
