Actress Ramya is a Lok Sabha MP now

Update: 2013-08-24 08:15 GMT
Actress Ramya who made her electoral debut by contesting on ruling Congress party ticket in Mandya Lok Sabha by-poll in Karnataka became victorious with a thumping majority of over 30,000 votes against her opponent Puttaraju of JDS.

Apparently, Mandya is a stronghold of JDS which won five out of the eight Assembly seats in the district in the general election in May this year. The majority of Ramya in the by-poll really surprised the political observers and her victory could be attributed to the sympathy wave generated after she lost her foster father RT Narayan on the day of her nomination.

The by-elections which were held for Mandya and Bangalore rural Lok Sabha constituencies have become a matter of prestige between Congress and JDS. While Congress backed the candidature of Ramya and DK Suresh, JDS fielded CS Puttaraju and Anita Kumaraswamy (wife of former chief minister HD Kuamaraswamy) against them.

Anita Kumaraswamy got defeated with a margin of over 70,000 votes. About 5,27,028 votes were polled for DK Suresh and 4,56,648 votes have gone for Anita.
