Will the BJP bowl another unplayable googly on the political opposition? Will it root for a woman as the chief minister of Tripura, where it was voted back to power in the recent elections? Highly placed sources say that the BJP is planning to make Pratibha Bhowmick, who is currently a minister of state in the Central government, the chief minister.
Pratibha Bhowmick is currently an MP from Tripura and holds the portfolio of empowerment and social justice. Pratibha is seen as a strong leader with a clear vision about the party ideology. The party leadership feels that she would steer the party through troubled waters as the BJP has the majority on its own and would face little problem from the alliance partners.
Lending credence to the buzz, victorious Manik Saha, who has been the chief minister after Biplab Deb was replaced, has submitted his resignation on Friday. The Governor asked him to continue as interim chief minister till alternative arrangements are made. As of now, in the event of Pratibha becoming the CM, she would have to get elected in a bypoll within six months after becoming the CM.
This strategy of making a woman the CM, will surely draw the women voters towards the BJP and further firm up its support base. It will also present the BJP as a pro-woman party. The BJP will have a Bengali speaking woman as the chief minister and she could become a counter-weight to West Bengalâs Mamta Banerjee, who is currently the only woman CM in the state.
