The Bifurufication act had slashed combined Andhra Pradesh into two states and it's been more than eight years since the states were formed. A few issues were pending for quite some time and increasing the number of assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states is one such issue.
This is not a demand and it was promised by the AP Reorganisation Act, which says that both states would see an increase in the number of Assembly seats. No one knows what would have happened if the grand old Congress party would have been in power now.
As the Bharatiya Janata Party is in ruling at the Centre, it appears like it is not at all bothered about the AP Reorganisation Act. The Union government said that it would take some time in implementing what was assured by the Act. Having said that, the saffron party said a Constitutional amendment should be made for that.
As a response to a query, the union government said that the increase in the Assembly seats will be done only per the 2026 census calculations. So it would be after 2026 and who gets to power at the Centre would have to focus on this.
The BJP has the power and required strength in the houses to make the amendments. But it is now showing much interest in doing the same as it has nothing to gain.
The national parties are accused of showing negligence towards the southern states, mainly the Telugu region. The answer the union government gave in the house about the Assembly seats only added fuel to the opinion.
According to the AP Reorganisation Act, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana would see an increase in the Assembly seats by 50 and 34 seats respectively. While the seats in Andhra Pradesh Assembly would be increased to 225 from the existing 175, the seats in other Telugu state would go up to 153.
