A nefarious racket of smuggling drones equipped with high resolution cameras into India for sensitive intelligence gathering by enemy countries has been busted. The kingpin of the drone smuggling, who was arrested in Ahmedabad, has bought drones from Pakistan, but got them smuggled into India through Myanmar. The drones, which were shown as cameras, were brought in from Morey in Manipur and from there they were brought in trucks to Ahmedabad. From there, they were supplied through private couriers to the customers.
Usage of drones requires several permissions as they could be used to gather sensitive information about defence installations and security apparatus. The nature of smuggling, involvement of Pakistan and the clandestine operations have raised suspicion of the investigating agencies, which tracked down the consignments and have taken into the custody the kingpin of the racket. Under government of India rules, drones can be flown only after securing permission from the Director General of Civil Aviation.
The police are probing as to whether the drone smuggling has the direct or indirect involvement of the Pak intelligence agency - the ISI.
