Flood Relief Protests Rattle TRS Leadership

The ruling TRS is rattled by the kind of anger and protest from the people over the GHMC decision to stop the payment of the flood relief amount of Rs 10000. On Saturday, the GHMC stopped the payment of the relief amount. The people took to streets in a large number and then laid a siege to the municipal bodies at various places.

Alleging that the ruling TRS politicians were interfering in the process of relief amount disbursement and that they were getting the amounts paid only to their supporters, a large number of people, especially women, gheraoed the GHMC offices in various places of the twin cities. They also said that the officials and the politicians were giving only partial amounts ranging from Rs 5000 to Rs 8000 and were keeping the cut for themselves.

During the recent floods, as many as 1572 colonies were submerged. The government has announced Rs 1 lakh for those whose houses were completely damaged. For the partially damaged houses, Rs 50000 were being given. Rs 10000 would be given to submerged areas. Thus, a total of 3.92 lakh households have been affected.

Dharmas and rallies were organised in Uppugude, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Saibaba Nagar, Kranthi Nagar, Arundhati Colony, Gowlipura, Parvatinagar, Lalitabad and other areas. Similar protests were registered in Gurubrahmanagar, Devarakonda Basti, Gourisankar nagar basti and BS Maktha. There were rasta rokos in Lingojiguda, tapovan coloy and Sriramnagar Colony, Rasapur Highway, Bolakpur, Musheerabad, Manikeshwari Nagar and other areas.

A rattled TRS had to requisition the help of KTR to bring the situation under control. KTR announced that everyone would be given the compensation. It was only after this that the protests subsided .
