In the state and local elections held in America on Tuesday, four Indian-Americans emerged victoriously. A Muslim Woman has won the elections for the first time.
Ghazala Hashmi, former community college professor was elected as the Virginia State Senate. She created history, by becoming the first Muslim woman to record a win in this election. Interestingly, Suhas Subramanyam, who worked as White House technology policy adviser to former President Barack Obama, was elected as a Representative to the Virginia State House.
Ghazala defeated Glen Sturtevant, current Senator of Republican State of Virginia's 10th Senate District. With this win, he created a national wide sensation.
"This victory is not mine alone. It belongs to all of you who believed that we needed to make progressive change here in Virginia, for all of you who felt that you havenât had a voice and believed in me to be yours in the General Assembly," said Ghazala on this win.
First woman presidential candidate and former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton took to Twitter to congratulate Ghazala for recording her maiden election win.
"I also want to shout out @Hashmi4Va, the first Muslim woman elected to the VA State Senate. As she said yesterday, her victory 'belongs to all of you who believed that we needed to make progressive change here in Virginia, for all of you who felt that you haven't had a voice'" read her tweet.
