The swiftness of AP Chief Minister YS Jagan's response on LG Polymers tragedy has left the Opposition TDP both baffled and shocked. Normally, this tragedy should have been in the headlines for years and the Opposition could have milked it for its political gains till the next election.
But, Jagan's moves have helped quickly put out the problem and left the Opposition literally without any issue. On May 6, when the gas leak roiled Vizag and its surroundings, Jagan rushed pronto and took stock of the situation. He announced Rs 1 crore as ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased and Rs 10 lakh for those hospitalized. Not just that, he ensured that the amount was given to the affected people while they are still in the hospital. Secondly, he ensured that his ministers stayed in the affected villages overnight and assuaged the feelings of the affected people. This worked wonders as the attempts to whip up anti-Government feelings was nipped in the bud itself. While the Opposition TDP was limited to issuing statements and Chandrababu remained locked in Hyderabad, the YSRCP leaders fanned out into the villages. By asking the LG Polymers to shift poisonous Styrene back to South Korea, Jagan showed that there would be no compromise with the public health. All these moves left the Opposition without any issue.
Today, LP Polymers issue is taking its own case. The police case is progressing normally and the Opposition finds itself unsure whether any agitation is needed at all. The affected people are now trusting YS Jagan's swift response more than the late incitements of the Opposition.
