After Karnataka and then Madhya Pradesh, it is now the turn of Rajasthan? Is the BJP targeting the Congress Government in Rajasthan? Will there be resignations and crossovers in the Congress Party soon threatening the very existence of the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress Government? Already precariously positioned, will the Congress government lose its majority?
These questions are being hotly debated in Rajasthan these days. Ever since, the BJP paired up with Congress renegade Jyothiraditya Scindia, succeeded in getting 22 Congress MLAs to resign and ensure the fall of Kamal Nath government, there were doubts that the Rajasthan Government, whose survival depends on a couple of independents and defectors from the BSP, would not survive long. With Rajya Sabha polls round the corner, the BJP is trying to ensure that several Congress MLAs resign and throw the government into a minority. This would also affect the outcome in the Rajya Sabha elections.
The Congress is now in a tizzy as Rajasthan is the only government apart from Punjab, where the party is in power on its own. In Maharashtra and Jharkhand, it is a junior partner in the non-BJP governments. Though it has Puducherry, it is too small a state to be taken into the count. CM Gehlot held an urgent meeting of the party MLAs on Wednesday to ensure that there are no defections. If sources are to be believed, something big could happen soon in Rajasthan.
