Minister Of State For Defence Shripad Naik Launches INS Vagir, Fifth Scorpene Class Submarine
One more Vela-class submarine joins the Indian Navy equipment after the Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik launched INS Vagir, fifth scorpene class submarine through video conference today.
The Minister launched the submarine in Arabian sea waters at Mazagaon Dock as part of Project 75. The French naval defence and energy company DCNS has been designing Kalvari-class submarines for the Indian Navy under project 75.
Vagir is part of the six Kalvari-class submarines designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS. The submarines were being built as part of the Indian Navy's Project-75.
The INS Vagir is the sixth Kalvari-class submarines and the fifth scorpene class submarine designed for the Indian Navy.
INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, INS Vela, and INS Vagsheer are the other five submarines. INS Kalvari, the first submarine in the Scorpene-class was launched in 2015 and the submarine was commissioned into service two years later in 2017.
Speaking on the occasion, Western Naval Command Chief, Vice Admiral R B Pandit expressed his happiness of Indian Navy receiving INS Vagir and said the submarine would be commissioned within a year.
