It's now almost 40 days since the pro-Amaravati padayatra of the famers has begun. The yatra is yet to make a mark. But the attempts to muzzle the yatra are giving it the kind of the fillip it badly needs. Political observers feel that the way the ruling party is trying to stifle the yatra is actually proving counter productive .
Take for instance the attempts at Ramachandrapuram in East Godavari. Local minister Chelluboyina Venu personally influenced the town Chamber of Commerce and made it shut down from 2 pm to 5 pm, when the yatra was to pass through the town. Thus, the yatra would be greeted by closed shops and empty roads.
However, the yatra got delayed by three months. The reason? The officials under the control of the minister have decided to enforce all the conditions that the court has imposed on the yatra. No more than 900 yatris were to be allowed. The other supporters were to stand only on the two sides of the road. By the time this arrangement was made, it was already six pm.
As a result, the shops and business establishments were opened. The result? The streets were jam packed by the time the yatra entered the town. The yatris managed to catch the attention of the people. Thus the minister's plan had unintended consequences and the yatra, which otherwise would have been a tame and insipid affair, became a runaway hit.
