May 2 is the D day for the politicians who fought elections in the five states of Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, besides the bye-polls across the country. But this time around, there would be no celebrations. Victor cannot take out celebratory processions and the vanquished too cannot take to streets out of frustration.
The Election Commission has said that no victory processions would be allowed this time. Even the winning candidate cannot bring more than two persons along with him to take the certificate of winning from the returning officer. This decision has been taken due to the massive rise in the Covid cases in the country. The last phase of polling would be held on April 29 and the results would be declared on May 2.
Interestingly, this decision comes after a media house conducted a survey of the covid cases in the states where the polls were held. In Kerala, there was a 130 per cent rise in Covid cases, while in Tamil Nadu, the rise was 56 per cent. In Assam and Bengal, the rise in cases was by 215 and 86 per cent respectively. In Uttar Pradesh, the rise in Covid positive cases after Kumbh Mela was just 46 per cent.
The election commission has announced a ban on victory rallies after Madras High Court has rapped it for the way the elections were conducted during the Covid season. It wanted a murder case be booked against the election commission for conducting elections despite Covid crisis.
