The Supreme Court dismissed the petition seeking directions to Union Government and Election Commission to bar Congress President Rahul Gandhi from contesting 2019 Lok Sabha Elections until confusion over his citizenship was cleared.
Complainants CP Tyagi and Jai Bhagwan Goyal informed the court that a UK-based Company had mentioned in its annual filing that Rahul Gandhi is a British Citizen. They presented the argument that Congress President is ineligible to contest elections in India if that is true.
The Supreme Court Bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna questioned, 'Does Rahul Gandhi becomes a British Citizen if a company mentions his nationality as British in some form'.
To end the allegations, Congress Party has already released an original certificate of incorporation of the company in which Rahul Gandhi was presented as an Indian. And now, The SC judgement comes as a huge relief for the Congress Boss.
