Union Govt Issues Notification To Bring OTT Platforms And Content Providers Under I&B Ministry's Roo
The Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a notification that brings over-the-top (OTT) media services, online news portals, and content providers under the Information and Broadcasting ministry.
With the latest development, the content providers like Netflix and the news that appear on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will be under Government Control.
The Honorable President of India Ramnath Kovind has signed on the notification to bring the online news portals, websites, and content providers under the roof of the I&B Ministry.
This will surely leave a toll on the independent filmmakers who are releasing their content on OTT platforms like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Sony LIV, and others.
However, more details on the rules and regulations of releasing the content on the platforms are awaited. From hereafter, the content will be monitored by the government.
The OTT platforms and news portals coming under the I&B Ministry is a result of a petition that was filed at the Supreme Court to seek directives to regulate the content on OTT platforms.
After hearing the petition, the top court served notices to the Union government, Ministry of I&B, and Internet and Mobile Association of India and sought a response on the same.
To regulate the content of OTT platforms and news portals, the Union Government has issued a Gazette Notification and President's consent made the bill an Act.
